Summer is acomin in

.. this morning I spotted the first toad of summer. Fortunately the kittehs were eating their umpteenth breakfast at the time and missed it.

I'm on holiday today. So far I have:
(a) got up to take Phoebesmum to work
(b) had a bath
(c) done some Phd reading
(d) loaded car up with trash from garage
(e) had blood pressure taken (I am, the nurse said cheerfully, perfect!)
(f) drove to the tip and emptied trash into appropriate skips
(g) gone to Home base and purchased stone slabs (the 3 I laid at the weekend aren't enough - the area outside the greenhouse needs to be double the width), pansies, compost, a new watering can (I broke the rose on the old one) and a clematis
(h) had healthy lunch.

Now I am going to play computer games for a while to recover.

Short technology rant

Upgraded my virus checker this morning, and it seems to have solved the issue with MSM not logging me in. However, all kinds of websites that used to work fine are bleeping and protesting and throwing up error messages right left and centre. Is this an indication that chaos is winning the battle over order? None of this modern tech seems to work particularly well, or work for as long as it used to (take boilers. The one we had in London worked fine for some 20 years, with just an annual clean, until they made back boilers illegal and it had to be replaced. The one we have here has had six or seven call-outs in the 5 years we've been here). And nobody seems to complain about it much.

I blame Bill Gates. Just because.

That album cover meme

I did this ages ago (Guardian website link, I think) and never got around to putting it together. It was a link to random pictures, a link to random Wikipedia articles, and a link to a quotes page. Put together for random album cover with random title and group. I rather liked this (which I got on the first attempt, no cheating):

Pub Quiz

... we won. Well, mostly Phoebesmum and the others won, but I bask in reflected glory. We scored 5 more points than the team that came second, as well!

To bed now, since I have to get up early to let the plumber in to mend the leak under the sink he put in a 2 weeks ago ...

Locations

Rather startled to discover that some of the outdoor scenes in 'Stardust' were filmed at Bicester Airfield, just up the road from us, normally home to a small fleet of gliders. When the thermals are good, the air is filled with them.

And in the Bergerac episode 'A Tale of Two Hamlets', the two hamlets concerned - Upper and Lower Warden - were apparently actually Brill (about 5 miles from here) and Penn (close by Phoebesmum's place, an hour's drive away). It would take quite some fold in reality to put those two places side by side!

Xmas

A Christmas egg! We didn't think we'd managed to catch me one, but when I went to my scroll there it was! This has made me very happy.

Adopt one today!

Grimsby

I often read the Grimsby Evening Telegraph webpage for light relief. One recent story enthused about the Christmas pantomime, due to be enlivened by "a real flying carpet." Yep, that would be pretty exciting.

Today there is a Breaking News flash - "Strange Object spotted in sky!: A strange bright, shiny object has been spotted in the sky over North East Lincolnshire this morning. Telegraph staff have just realised it is, in fact the sun ..."

Grimsby is *such* an exciting place!!

Hm ...

I was checking how much my old flat in Grimsby would be worth today when I came across this entry.  Is this the world's most honest estate agent ...

"Spacious end terrance house situated in good position.  The grottiest property on our books but a great refurbishment project."

... or did the grass growing out of the gutters leave them with no choice?!

27 years on ...

As Broooce arrived on the stage at the Emirates Stadium on Friday night, I heard myself say rather wistfully, "Whatever happened to those 27 years?"

Wembley Arena, 1981.  The start of more than half a lifetime of concert attendances, all over England.  And two very different concerts this year, on two consecutive nights, at Emirates Stadium, London.  Friday we were lower down, the sound quality was poor, but everyone in our block danced the night away with the result I limped painfully back to the hotel.  Saturday, we had front row balcony seats almost square on to the stage, sound quality superb (despite the fractional Stadium lag), but I had to save the dancing for the encores since I knew I had to get back to where we'd left our car, and then drive back home.

None of which expresses the sheer joy of watching Springsteen and the E Street Band.  Or the rawness of my throat from screaming lyrics back at the stage.  Or the absolute delight of singing Thunder Road on Friday night (even if I do seem to have misplaced a few of the lyrics - if I had a decent memory, I might have been dangerous).  If I could bottle that moment somewhere in the middle of Born to Run ... well, I'll just have to store it mentally to spit in the face of the next miserable moment.

Thanks, Brooce, and thanks, E Street Band.

What we learned today

When Microsoft claimed all 32,000 games in original Freecall came out, they were lying.  Game 11,982 can't be got out.

I didn't know this when I passed that number, since I got up to 70,510 before I got the extended version with more games and stopped counting.  At any rate, I'm now wondering whether I'm the only person in the world to have got 11,982 out.

If so, I think I'll keep quiet about it ...

Hey, I was in a *very* boring job at the time - !

Kittehs

The kittehs have today been neutered - both Genny and Molly have big, shaved bits, as as for Shadow - who knows?  He's on top of the cupboards in the kitchen and Not Coming Down.  Except for food, of course.

The nurse said, "Keep them quiet for the next week or so."  Quiet?  Genny, still wobbly, is chasing a ball round the kitchen.  I already took several away from her, she has a seemingly endless hidden stash (we have given them far too many toys!).  Molly is watching birds through the window, and would probably be out there chasing them given half a chance.  If they start to lick their wounds we are supposed to put those big, protective collars on them.  Since we can't watch them 24 hrs a day I am not sure how we are supposed to know if they are licking themselves, or each other, so I suspect THOSE won't get used!

We also have to take them back in 10 days for a check-up.  Since catching Shadow this morning has left me with 2 massive gashes, one on my arm and one of the back of my leg, this could be entertaining.

At any rate, there is no chance now of accidental kittens!!

Gifts

A quick thank-you to LJers who came bearing gifts, all much appreciated.

Last Cat Standing, Phoebe, is currently well stoned on her Xmas smelly fish, which she didn't have to share with anyone else this year.

By way of variation this year, Xmas dinner will follow Dr Who.

PIB Lee icon in honor of Xmas Josephs and Marias, which along with the 100-best-musical thing (which we've seen before) was a good way to while away Xmas eve!

I could have done without the Xmas cold ...

Seven words (finally)

It's an indication of how uninspired I am at present that even when given prompts it takes me over a week to actually attempt to do anything with them. Sorry, Lil - they did make me think, but failed to make me write. Until now, that is.

I was the kind of small child who didn't think things through. Chasing my ball into the sea did seem like a good idea at the time, but the wave that came in the opposite direction wasn't so good. My brother did just about the only useful thing he ever did for me and scooped me out, or I probably wouldn't be here today.  I have never quite trusted the sea since ...

In the early days of fandom, we spent a lot of time at conventions in very brief costumes (something that I wouldn't do now, due to size and age).  There were two black American fans, and I was always wildly jealous of how perfect they looked in just about anything - their ebony skin and hair seemed to work with any colour and any fabric, unlike my pasty yellowish flesh which somehow clashed with everything.  Costumers almost came to blows over getting them in their fashion shows.  Mythichistorian went by the Leeds Hilton the other day, which as we all know used to be the Dragonara.  And whilst the hotel may have changed its name, the Brigante Suite remains the same.

Nova - well, conventions again, really - it used to be the tradition to have a really naff movie on the first night, the one I remember most clearly being Santa Klaus Conquers the Martians - past bad and into hilarious.   Also, Sam Delaney's guest speech at whichever Worldcon it was, where my suspicions that he had studied philosophy were confirmed.  And wow, what an amazing beard!

Turn reminded me of Anne McCaffrey's Pern books, it's a long time since I read any of those although I must have some on the shelf somewhere.  And that reminded me (in turn, groan) of the dead duck party at at Trek con where she graced us with her party piece, which was even funnier than Rog Peyton's readings from the book of pyramids.

Foundation ... and empire?  (It's gone midnight, I seem to be into free assocation - !)   Also, whoever at Body Shop redesigned the packaging of their make-up base from a sensible square box which slipped nicely into one's handbag to a stupid, bulky round thing that you only had to look at to break, and where you had to lift the tray with the powder to get at the sponge.  Daft - they lost MY custom!

I was trying not to think about work, but confess Birch and Collar both immediately reminded me.  Mythichistorian suggested I talk about cat collars instead, but there really isn't very much I can say about them, except perhaps that they ought to come in two lengths since we always wasted two thirds of the Tig's, her being so small.  I have nothing much to say about birch trees, either.  Sycamores, now those I could go on about at length - they're not trees, they're woody weeds.  We used to get so many seedlings in Thornton Heath that the whole garden could've easily become a sycamore grove.  And may be, by now, for all I know.

So, there, something on seven words - eventually.  Thanks, Lil!  I will also confess to this brief moment of 70s SF magazine prose:

Shaded beneath the birch, the ebony prince watches the nova.  A turn of the universe, he eases his collar and gives the Foundation ambassador a languid wave.  “Seven words, eh?” he mutters.

I can go to bed with a clean conscience now!

Biobank

Since I am doing research myself at present, when asked to take part in a piece of National medical research, I felt obliged to turn up, as indeed did one of my neighbours, thus proving I suspect that they set appointments by postcode order!

Anyway, I scored 100% on snap and not nearly so well on 'pairs' (my eyesight is too poor to take in the detail in the time allowed) and, needless to say, was judged overweight. Very. No surprises there, then.

The nurse taking the blood sample gave me the usual askance look when I cheerfully advised her to not even think about using anything except the butterfly, but after 10 minutes of poking and prodding admitted defeat and got one out of the drawer. I smirked triumphantly. She then proceeded to take SIX vials of blood.

I have therefore concluded that Biobank is a cover for a very clever sect of British vampire.

PS On the PhD front, in one week I have got back nearly 100 completed questionnaires ... who says policemen won't fill in forms?!

Holiday, yay!

Have just started a week's holiday, followed by a week in Luton. What this actually means is a week desperately trying to do 3 months worth of PhD work so that I appear to have done something when I arrive in Luton ... oh yes, and I already lost one day because they decided to have a departmental awayday on Wednesday and I felt obliged to turn up for it. Sigh.

The week in Luton will be amusing, as I am staying in student accommodation again - it's stupidly cheap, which means it's also stupidly basic. But I can park the car free and walk to and from the Uni - about 5 mins! - and get plenty of time to do Phd work in the evenings, apart from the one where we're all going out for a meal. And going to the pub, of course. Two of the other students may also be staying over, I'm not sure whether to hope we all end up in the same flat or not!!

At any rate, it should be a laugh.

Which is more than can be said for the season finale of Who, which was just pathetic and no fun at all.

In the meantime, I have made three new icons of roses in my garden, the best of which I am using today.

An update, don't faint!

Yeah, yeah, I know, I keep saying I will update more regularly - but, really, so little happens!

Any Dream - pleased by the result, amused to discover later that Connie was pre-recorded (we did wonder whether a whole theater full of people were disappointed because she wasn't there!).

Who - last few eps have been better - it had got seriously bad! - and I'm highly amused by their casting for the Master.

Baby - Simon Patrick, that is - seems very placid and thoughtful, and was completely unphased by being passed from person to person at work, apparently including (I missed this!) the Deputy Chief Constable!

Garden - doing quite well, despite periodic torrential downpours. The greenhouse has arrived and is sitting in the garage in pieces whilst I clear the piece of land for it to go on, sort out a base, and then arrange for the boys from work to come and build it - it appears to be a giant meccano set, and that was definitely a boy's toy when I was little (my brother wouldn't let me play with his, anyway!). We're thinking of making it a team building event - the girls can sit and laugh at the boys as they struggle to figure out the instructions!

Cats - mad as ever.

And that's about it, really.

And here is one of our azaleas, showing its appreciation of the warm spring:

And finally (insert fanfare) I present - Hoppity! Our toad (?) survived the winter and sat still long enough for me to get the camera!
