New pooter
May. 27th, 2006 06:29 pm... so last Sunday, wandered up to PC World in Aylesbury with Mythichistorian, picked a couple of potential new pooters, and parked the thought until Wednesday ...
... when returned with boyfriend, who understands remote networking. PC World had managed to shuffle ALL the displays, and the two I'd selected just weren't there any more. Sigh. So found another that appeared to be OK, and was exdisplay so cheap, but without screen, but that was OK because I wanted a BIG screen. Which I got, and very big it is too. Got extra memory, programms, network card, etc. etc., and paid less than I paid for the 15" screen on my last pooter for the whole lot.
Back home, found memory card was the wrong one, and that the 6 key doesn't work (am now busy listing all the other keys that don't work) leading to some amusement about the fact the number of the beast was now .
Today, discovered that bastard Gates has now fixed Word etc. so that you have to activate it online or it doesn't work. The broadband modem had gone down again. Couldn't remember how to reboot it. Hilary unplugged it at the mains (also not good for it, but it remembered it was supposed to BROADCAST, so that was a move in the right direction).
Got word fixed. Loaded Dungeon Siege II YAY! First attempt to run it led to mysterious black screen and discovery there was no way to either exit or reboot the pooter. A pooter with no reboot key?? Weird ...
Controlaltdelete doesn't seem to do anything either, but that might be because one or other of those keys isn't working either ...
So, all in all, not exactly a brilliant start. I already hate XP ...
Screen really is big. Have moved wallpaper of Jeffrey. Made the mistake of remarking to Sabine, "Boy, is he big!" She roared, I blushed, darned good thing there weren't many people in the office ...!
No dash. No five. No plus ...
