Was supposed to go up to London to have lunch with the girls I used to work with at the Transport Police, but have spent most of the week struggling with a head cold - the sort that leaves you feeling drained and as if someone has stuffed your head with cotton wool. Fortunately nothing major came up at work. I had one day off and probably should have had more, but had a far-too-important-to-miss meeting on Wednesday so struggled in. Of course you don't get much in the way of thanks, but still it was worth me going to find out that everyone in the meeting had a different idea of what the review of youth justice ought to be about. At least I may have a chance of steering the boat through the rapids now I know where the rocks are!!

At any rate, no trip to London for me today. Just as well I cancelled, actually, as thanks to Night Nurse I slept until nearly midday!

The cold also means I've been crawling home at night and falling over, so just as well probably Kit was in Rome as I wouldn't have been good company. Also good this happened the week *after* my birthday. Speaking of which, oy! Mr Springsteen! That concert was ON MY BIRTHDAY, where were our tickets?!!

And, of course, I've got nothing done on the PhD. I comfort myself with the knowledge that (a) it's a professional PhD so everything I do at work kind of counts and (b) that'll give my mind time to sort everything neatly into boxes. I work best if I have time to let things settle.

Feeling rough does mean I've watched RAVEN every night this week, even though they're now into repeat cycle. Still have no idea what the attraction is, but that man does make my pulse race.

Went to the doctor's this week to quietly suggest I might have a thyroid problem, and incidentally isn't it about time they checked my red blood cell count, since I've had a problem with it in the past. Thankfully the doctor I saw couldn't say it was all due to overweight, as she was at least twice my size. Very comforting, I think I'll make her my regular doc! At any rate, at least this time the nurse taking the blood didn't leave me with a 3" square bruise, although she also had enormous difficulty getting my body to give her any blood (I don't like giving it away, vampires would hate me). I also had an ECG, which has turned from a half hour effort (last time I had one, in Grimsby) to a couple of minutes with a little hand-held computer thing that then transferred the info into her computer against my record. Ghad, technology has leapt and bounded in my lifetime.

I am thinking about buying a new computer tomorrow, depends how I feel when I get there and how much they try to sting me for. But I suspect I am the last person in the world still using Microsoft ME!
